Weaning Meal Plan for 9–12 Months: Progressing to Family Food
Where Your Baby Should Be at 9–12 Months
By nine months, most babies who started weaning at around six months have been eating solids for several weeks. They should be moving away from smooth purées and towards foods that are minced, chopped, or offered as recognisable pieces they can pick up and chew themselves. By their first birthday, the goal is for your baby to be eating soft versions of family food — sitting at the table, sharing mealtimes, and managing a wide range of textures.
This is also the period when milk feeds begin to reduce naturally. Most babies at nine months have around three to four milk feeds per day (whether breast or formula). By twelve months, the transition to a mixed diet of food and drinks (including full-fat cow's milk as a main drink from twelve months onwards) is underway. You do not need to abruptly drop milk feeds — this happens gradually as food intake increases and your baby's appetite for milk naturally decreases.
This meal plan assumes your baby has been weaning for at least a few weeks. Adapt textures as appropriate for your individual child.
Monday
Breakfast Porridge with mashed banana and a spoonful of smooth almond butter. By nine months, oat porridge can have more texture — coarser oats, and not blended smooth. Top with a few soft blueberries (squashed slightly).
Lunch Mini pitta bread with hummus spread thickly, cut into strips. Alongside: very soft cucumber slices, halved cherry tomatoes (quartered if you're cautious), and a few pieces of mild Cheddar cheese.
Dinner Spaghetti bolognese (no salt, no added sugar in the sauce) with well-cooked pasta. By this age, you can offer the spaghetti long or cut it into shorter pieces — both are good practice for self-feeding. The family can eat the same dish; simply hold back a baby portion before adding seasoning.
Tuesday
Breakfast Scrambled egg (well-cooked) with half a slice of buttered toast cut into squares. Add sliced cherry tomatoes (quartered) on the side. Offer a cup of water.
Lunch Soft cheese (like ricotta or cream cheese) on rice cakes, with soft avocado slices. Alongside, offer steamed broccoli florets — by this age, a texture your baby should be managing confidently.
Dinner Mild chicken curry (no salt, very mild spice if any) with rice. The chicken should be very soft — slow-cooked and shredded works well. Serve with a small portion of plain natural yoghurt on the side, which can be mixed in to cool the dish.
Wednesday
Breakfast Yoghurt with granola or crushed Weetabix, topped with soft seasonal fruit. At nine months, babies can manage small, soft pieces of fruit such as tinned peach in juice (not syrup), soft pear, and very ripe melon.
Lunch Homemade fish cakes (salmon and potato, no salt, lightly fried or baked) — a wonderful way to introduce oily fish. Cut into quarters or offer as a whole small cake. Alongside: peas (now manageable as a pincer grip challenge) and steamed green beans.
Dinner Lentil and vegetable dahl (mild, no added salt) with very soft naan torn into pieces. This is an excellent iron-rich meal. Add a squeeze of lemon to boost iron absorption from the lentils.
Thursday
Breakfast Eggy bread (French toast) with soft berries on the side. For variety, add a pinch of cinnamon to the egg before dipping.
Lunch Small cheese and tomato pizza on a pitta base. Homemade is best — use a no-added-salt tomato sauce, low-moisture mozzarella (go easy), and no salty toppings. Cut into bite-sized squares.
Dinner Roast salmon fillet (check for bones meticulously) with mashed sweet potato and steamed tenderstem broccoli. The salmon should flake easily — this is a great texture milestone food.
Friday
Breakfast Banana pancakes (mash one banana with one egg and a tablespoon of oats, fry in a little butter) — a popular baby-friendly recipe that is naturally sweet without added sugar. Cut into strips or bite-sized pieces.
Lunch Vegetable and bean soup — a slightly thicker consistency than earlier in weaning, with small soft pieces of vegetables rather than fully puréed. Serve with bread for dipping. Beans (butter beans, cannellini) are excellent sources of plant-based protein and iron.
Dinner Family shepherd's pie: minced lamb cooked with vegetables and tomatoes (no salt), topped with mashed potato. This is the kind of dish everyone can eat together, requiring no separate preparation for baby.
Saturday
Breakfast Bircher muesli — oats soaked overnight in full-fat yoghurt, topped with grated apple and a few raspberries. More textured than earlier versions; the soft oat and fruit pieces are manageable for most nine-month-olds.
Lunch Filled pitta pockets — soft pitta opened and filled with cream cheese and very thinly sliced cucumber. Cut in half. Alongside, offer a few crackers (low-salt) with soft cheese.
Dinner Family pasta bake — cooked pasta in a vegetable-based sauce (courgette, tomato, onion — all well cooked until soft), topped with a little grated Cheddar and baked until the top is soft (not crunchy). Share from the same dish.
Sunday
Breakfast Weekend French toast with a little cinnamon, served with Greek yoghurt and soft fruit. A leisurely, sit-together family breakfast.
Lunch Quiche (homemade, lower in salt than shop-bought) cut into small slices. Alongside: a selection of soft salad — halved cherry tomatoes, avocado chunks, and soft cucumber.
Dinner Slow-roasted chicken thighs (very tender, removed from the bone) with roasted root vegetables — parsnip, carrot, and potato — all roasted until very soft. The whole family can eat the same dinner, making this a true family meal milestone.
Finger Food Ideas for 9–12 Months
By nine months, the pincer grip develops, enabling babies to pick up smaller pieces. Some excellent finger food options at this stage include:
- Cubes of soft cheese
- Soft fruit pieces (melon, kiwi, soft pear)
- Peas, sweetcorn (squashed between fingers first)
- Small pasta pieces
- Mini rice cakes (low-salt)
- Soft bread and toast
- Well-cooked egg in any form
- Banana pieces (leaving a little peel on helps with grip)
Dropping Milk Feeds Gradually
There is no need to force milk reduction — it tends to happen naturally as solid food intake increases. A common pattern is:
- 9 months: Four milk feeds per day — morning, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, bedtime
- 10 months: Three milk feeds — morning, mid-afternoon, bedtime
- 11–12 months: Two to three feeds, depending on the individual baby
From twelve months, if you are formula-feeding, you can switch to full-fat cow's milk as a drink. The NHS recommends a minimum of 350ml per day for one-year-olds, spread across meals and drinks.
Eating Together: Why It Matters
Research consistently shows that family mealtimes — eating together, from the same dishes, in a relaxed environment — are one of the strongest predictors of long-term healthy eating. By this stage of weaning, the goal is increasingly to make your baby's meals look like yours. Pull up the highchair, sit down together, and let them see you enjoying a wide variety of foods. It is the most natural and effective form of nutritional education there is.
