The Family Dinner Approach

One of the most powerful things you can do during weaning is to cook meals that the whole family eats together. Research consistently shows that shared family mealtimes are one of the strongest predictors of positive long-term eating behaviours in children. When babies see parents and siblings eating and enjoying the same food, they are far more motivated to explore it themselves.

This does not mean cooking two separate meals — a nutritious one for adults and a bland one for baby. With a few simple principles, most family dinners can be adapted to suit a baby from around seven months onwards. The key adaptations are: removing salt, adjusting texture, and occasionally modifying specific ingredients (such as whole nuts or very hard vegetables).

How to Adapt Adult Recipes for Babies

Remove salt at source. Never add salt to baby food. Cook baby's portion without salt and season adult portions afterwards. Avoid stock cubes — use low-salt or no-salt alternatives, or make your own stock. Also avoid soy sauce, miso, Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce, and other high-sodium condiments in baby food.

Adjust texture. For younger babies, mash, blend, or fork through the family meal to achieve a softer consistency. For older babies, simply cutting food into smaller pieces may be sufficient.

Modify hard or hazardous ingredients. Remove whole nuts, seeds, and hard chunks. Cook firm vegetables a little longer than you might for adults.

Limit highly processed foods. Processed meats (sausages, bacon), ready meals, takeaways, and most adult snack foods are too high in salt and often in additives.

Be mindful of spice. Contrary to popular belief, babies can handle mild herbs and spices well. Paprika, coriander, cumin, and cinnamon are all fine. Very hot chilli should be avoided for young babies, but mild spice is both safe and beneficial for flavour development.

20 Dinner Ideas for 6–12 Months

For 6–8 months (smooth to lumpy textures)

1. Mild lentil and vegetable dahl A simple dahl made from red lentils, carrot, and a small amount of tinned tomatoes, spiced with mild cumin and coriander (no salt). Blend for younger babies or serve with texture. Offer with soft naan or chapati.

2. Fish pie White fish and perhaps a little salmon, poached in full-fat milk and flaked (check for bones), combined with a simple béchamel and topped with mashed potato. Make without salt and check no salt is in the fish.

3. Roasted vegetable soup (blended) Roast tomatoes, red pepper, courgette, and onion until soft and caramelised. Blend with a little stock (no-salt) until smooth. Serve with soft bread.

4. Chicken and sweet potato mash Very soft poached or slow-cooked chicken thigh, finely shredded or blended, served alongside mashed sweet potato with butter. An iron-rich, protein-rich combination.

5. Minced beef and vegetable ragu Lean minced beef cooked with onion, carrot, celery, and tinned tomatoes (no salt). Blend slightly for younger babies or serve as-is for older ones over well-cooked pasta.

For 8–10 months (mashed and chopped textures)

6. Salmon and broccoli pasta Flaked cooked salmon stirred through soft pasta with steamed broccoli and a little cream cheese or crème fraîche to bind. No salt — the salmon provides sufficient flavour.

7. Shepherd's pie Minced lamb cooked with onion, carrot, and rosemary (no salt, no stock cubes) topped with smooth mashed potato. A true British family classic that adapts perfectly for babies.

8. Chicken casserole Chicken thighs slow-cooked with carrots, leeks, and a little thyme. The long cooking makes the chicken very tender and easy to shred. Thicken the sauce with a little cornflour if desired.

9. Mild Thai-style vegetable curry A gently spiced vegetable curry (courgette, sweet potato, spinach) in coconut milk with a tiny amount of mild Thai green curry paste (use sparingly as most shop-bought pastes contain salt). Serve with rice.

10. Tomato and lentil soup with bread A chunky but soft lentil soup with tomato, carrot, and celery. By eight months, you don't need to fully blend it — leaving soft chunks for babies to explore is excellent texture practice.

11. Homemade turkey meatballs in tomato sauce Minced turkey mixed with a little egg and fresh breadcrumbs (no salt), rolled into small balls and baked, then served in a simple tomato sauce over well-cooked pasta. Great finger food once babies are confident self-feeders.

12. Baked cod with roasted vegetables Cod fillet baked in a little olive oil and lemon juice until just cooked through. Serve alongside very soft roasted courgette, cherry tomatoes (squashed), and potatoes.

For 10–12 months (family food textures)

13. Spaghetti bolognese A family bolognese made without salt, using lean minced beef, tinned tomatoes, and a little carrot and celery finely chopped. The whole family eats together. Baby's portion can be cut into shorter pieces.

14. Roast chicken dinner Very soft roasted chicken (thigh meat is more tender than breast), well-cooked roasted vegetables, and mashed or soft roasted potato. Remove any skin and bones before serving baby.

15. Fish tacos (baby style) Soft flour tortilla with flaked baked cod, mashed avocado, and a little Greek yoghurt (instead of sour cream). Cut into quarters. Babies at this stage can manage a soft tortilla rolled and squashed.

16. Egg fried rice (baby version) Cooked rice stir-fried with beaten egg, peas, sweetcorn, and a tiny splash of low-salt soy sauce (very small amount — use sparingly). A useful way to use leftover rice.

17. Slow cooker pulled chicken Chicken thighs slow-cooked until they fall apart, with a mild tomato-based sauce. Shred and serve with soft bread, mashed potato, or in a soft wrap.

18. Vegetable and cheese frittata A thick, baked omelette with soft cooked vegetables — roasted red pepper, courgette, and spinach — and grated cheese. Cut into wedges. Excellent hot or cold, making it good for packed lunches too.

19. Bean and vegetable chilli (mild) A vegetarian chilli made with kidney beans, black beans, tinned tomatoes, and mild spice (cumin, paprika, a tiny amount of chilli if family tolerance allows). No salt. Serve with rice or soft bread.

20. Mild prawn and vegetable stir-fry with noodles Cooked prawns (check no added salt) with very soft stir-fried vegetables and soft egg noodles. Use a tiny amount of sesame oil for flavour instead of soy sauce. Prawns are an excellent lean protein and serve as an allergen introduction.

Batch Cooking for Weekday Dinners

Batch cooking is the practical backbone of stress-free weaning. Meals like dahl, bolognese, shepherd's pie, and casseroles all freeze excellently. Make a double batch at the weekend, freeze in individual baby portions, and simply defrost throughout the week. Always label with the meal name and date.

When reheating frozen meals, ensure they are piping hot throughout and then allowed to cool to a safe temperature before serving. Never reheat the same portion more than once.

A Note on Salt

The maximum recommended salt intake for babies aged six to twelve months is 1 gram per day. To put this in context: one small rasher of bacon contains around 0.7g of salt; one slice of most adult breads contains 0.3–0.5g. It is easy to exceed the limit with processed foods, which is why home cooking from scratch is so valuable during this period.

The simplest rule: never add salt during cooking or at the table, and avoid any processed ingredient where salt is listed in the top five ingredients.
